Sweden is currently attempting to form a government. To form a government, a party (or group of parties) needs 175 votes. A minority government can form if other parties allow it. As mentioned in prior blogs, their are 2 main blocks of parties: the centre-left and the Alliance. There is also the far-right Sweden Democrats.
There was already one attempt to form a government via the Alliance.
Currently the centre-left is attempting to form a government.
Via Politico:
Sweden’s caretaker Prime Minister Stefan Löfven has two weeks to try to form a governing coalition after the center right failed to win support in the wake of September’s indecisive election . . . The acting premier said he would speak to all the mainstream parties, including center-left groups allied to his Social Democrats and those from the Moderate-led Alliance. But he said he wouldn’t consult the anti-immigrant Sweden Democrats, who have so far been ruled out as potential partners by both major parties.
It appears he is attempting to break apart the Alliance, which is made up of 4 parties: Moderates, Centre Party, Christian Democrats and Liberals. The centre-left bloc currently holds 144 seats. To get to 175, they'd need either the Centre Party (31 seats) to breakaway or both the Christian Democrats (22 seats) and Liberals (20 seats). Any of the three combined would create a large enough majority for the Centre-left, as well.
Though I've written about Sweden politics over the last few months, I'm not familiar enough with these parties to have a good idea of who might be willing to switch to the centre-left. In my prior blog, I did note that the Sweden Democrats (far-right party) believes that the Centre Party and Liberals want to increase immigration into Sweden. Perhaps those two are the most likely to switch to the Centre-left bloc.
Currently, this is the second attempt to form a government. There are two more attempts before a snap election is required. Would the third attempt be given to the Sweden Democrats? That would fail. Then the fourth attempt goes to the Centre Party as they have the fourth largest number of seats? If so, I suspect the Centre Party would not break away from the Alliance until that point in time.
