Iraq: Saudi Arabia attempt to blunt Iran's influence

I came across this article from Al Jazeera discussing how there was a renewed attempt by Saudi Arabia to get Iraq to move away from Iranian influence.

Isn't this a little too late? I immediately recalled an article that I read about how Iran is supporting Iraq in their fight with the Kurdish attempt for independence.

This NPR article is not the one I read, but here's a similar quote to what I read: The Kurdish Regional Security Council says the operation began just before midnight and involved both Iraqi forces and Iran-backed militia fighters, "using U.S. military equipment, including Abrams tanks and Humvees."

First, Iraq was able to gain an advantage over the Kurds via "Iran-backed militia fighters." In fact, Iraq did so well against the Kurds that the Kurds basically asked for a truce.  Would Iraq turn their backs so quickly on Iran, which is helping them with the Kurds?

Second, notice how the Iraqis, and perhaps by default, the Iranians used US military equipment against the Kurds.

Weren't the Kurds and Iraqis our allies in defeating ISIS in Mosul? So essentially our own military equipment is being used by one American ally to attack another American ally? Is this a little unreal?
